Void

M i n a Z a r f s a z . Void. 2013 . Performance

Void shows a woman whose drywall face bears the scar of inhibition. Marked with punches, she childishly dances to celebrate the freedom that she does not have in a vast, open space that further emphasizes the
non-existent freedom of woman. While the content of the piece deals with the subject of the social and
political placement of women in Islamic countries, and the undefined freedom in which they are imprisoned, the focus of the piece is silent violence. By making a connection between the known and the unknown, and mixing metaphors that are particularly poignant, the piece combines purely subjective content with universal systems to
create meaning, and invites the audience to empathize with the cultural alienation of the individual.
